Helping Your Body Protect Itself

Immunology is the study of how your body protects itself against infectious diseases, and how your immune system works to keep you healthy. Our board-certified immunologists have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of primary immunodeficiency disorders. What is Immunology?

In a healthy person, the immune system helps the body battle infection by rejecting and fighting foreign viruses and bacteria. If the immune system is defective, these defenses can fail, and the body can end up attacking itself.

Home to immunologists and researchers who study immunology, St. Lawrence Health is constantly working to keep your immune system functioning properly.

Major disorders related to the immune system include:

  • Addison’s Disease
  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Celiac Disease
  • Colitis
  • Chrone’s Disorder
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Epstein Barr
  • Hodgkin’s Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Legionnaires Disease
  • Lupus
  • Lymphoma
  • Shingles
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

It can be difficult to pinpoint what is causing your immune system disorder, but your immunologist will work closely with you to diagnose, manage, and treat yours.

Immune Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of immune disorders tend to vary depending on where your abnormal immune response is located, but they include:

  • Delayed recovery from illness
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Recurrent infections
  • Poor response to treatment

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call the Immunology team at (315) 714-3170.

Diagnosing and Treating Immune Disorders

During your initial consultation, your provider will take your detailed medical history, which will include questions about any relatives who may have an immune system disorder. You will also undergo a physical examination, as well as blood tests or prenatal tests which can be used to get an accurate diagnosis.

Our team will work tirelessly to find the right medication or medications to treat your immune disorder.
